ABOUT ANJINHOS
“Many people only know soccer, samba, coffee—the cheap stuff—but there are many luxury goods from Brazil too,” says Saori Fuse, owner of Brazilian fashion boutique Anjinhos. Said luxury goods include gauzy maxi dresses, bold jewelry, sexy grown-up lingerie, and of course bikinis. Make that lots of bikinis, flaunting unique cuts, strategically placed ties, and embellishments like embroidery and beadwork. Bursting with shades of coral, sunflower, and a myriad of blues, it is quite possible that this diminutive Nakameguro boutique packs more color than an entire floor of Takashimaya.
“Brazilian fashion is an incredible mixture—European, African, Asian, it’s all in there,” Fuse explains, adding: “It’s this mix that makes it interesting.” The former JAL stewardess got her first glimpse of Brazil at the age of 15, when her father’s job took her family to the Amazonian city of Manaus for three years. The experience left her enchanted with Brazilian culture and able to speak both Portuguese and English. She opened Anjinhos, which means “little angels” in Portuguese, last May and has already received attention from magazines like Glitter and Marie Claire.
Always looking for exciting new designers, Fuse travels to regularly to Brazil to scour the streets and showrooms; the rest of her stock she sources from a network of well-connected friends. She laments that only a handful of Brazilian brands are readily available in Tokyo, and often at hugely inflated prices. Instead of relying on market studies and trend reports, Fuse brings back “what she likes,” including pieces from her current favorites Isabela Capeto and Bambu. Stock is limited, granting Anjinhos’ customers that ultimate luxury of access to one-of-a-kind items.
